Earth has been known as the "Goldilocks planet." In the account of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," a young lady named Goldilocks preferred everything spot on. Her porridge couldn't be excessively hot or excessively cold. What's more, her bed couldn't be excessively hard or excessively delicate. On Earth, everything is perfect for life to exist. It's warm, however not very warm. What's more, it has water, however not all that much water.

The rush for land that the world is currently experiencing has redirected attention to the land, its uses and its value. But the earth is a strange object. While it is often treated as a thing and sometimes as a commodity, the earth is not like a carpet: you cannot roll it up and take it with you wherever you want. To create productive uses of the land, it is necessary to produce exclusion regimes that distinguish legitimate uses and users from those that are not, and to implement segmentation through devices such as barriers, title deeds, laws, areas of use, regulations, milestones and dramaturgies. Land does not become a resource by virtue of any intrinsic or natural quality, but through the assembly of material elements, relationships, technologies and discourse which must be combined and harmonized. And turning it into an investment object requires even more work. This article, taken from a plenary conference given at the Institute of British Geographers (Royal Geographical Society), uses the concept of assembly to analyze the practices that constitute land as a resource. It focuses, in particular, on “statistical representations” and certain other graphic tools that make large-scale investments in the land conceivable. It also analyzes the practices that allow enrollment in the assembly of different actors (experts, investors, villagers, governments).
